You Don't Have Extensions?Almost ALL of the FrontPage features work even if you don't have extensions. It's just a matter of getting the information published to the browser. There is only one major change you need when creating your webs and that is the location you store your web on your local PC.
When you decide to create a new web, choose a name. It doesn't have to be the final name you give your website, just something that will be easy for you to remember and identify on your own PC. Create a folder on your desktop with that same name. You can have a folder on your desktop with many separate and totally unrelated webs in it. Create your new web in FrontPage
Type in the Location. This is the IMPORTANT part. The location you store your no-extensions web in determines how easily your get as much from FrontPage as possible.
The image above has the curser just under the area where you are to type in the location of our new web.
After you have typed in the path to your new web on your desktop, click OK. This dialog box will appear during the set up process. Just click YES and FrontPage will add ALL the neccessary folders to make the desktop location a fully functional FrontPage web. The ONLY features that will not be functional are those that would ordinarily require cgi-bin access or the extensions. All other features such as themes, shared borders, most insert components, etc etc will be fully functional.
Create a new folder for your web on your desktop. (The same as you would for a new web.) Open FrontPage. Open your existing web from it's default location. Choose Publish Web from the File menu. This dialog box will appear. Click the Browse button and Navigate to the folder on your desktop. The dialog box below will appear (without the folder listings in the white section.) Click on Desktop (see it there on the left?) and the folder (and other desktop contents will appear in the white section.) Either double click on your newly created web folder or single click to highlight it and then click Open to put this path into the publish dialog box. The Publish Web Dialog box will again be visible with the path to your desktop web. Click Publish.
When the following dialog box pops up, FP has transffered your existing web into the folder on your desktop. Just click Done. I always close FP at this point and look in my web folder just to make sure everything went well. Just open your web folder like you would open any other folder on your desktop. You do not need to do anything with these "extra folders" FP has put into the web folder. You will see shared borders, themes, etc. Just leave them alone until you are ready to upload your site to your server. Then, highlight them and upload with your favorite FTP program. Look in other areas of the webmasters |
