Build Your Navigation Frame
Open navigation.htm (not index.htm).
Add a table to this page, one row for each page you will want to be able to click to open. That would be Main (which we will call Home,) Photos, Favorite Links, Favorite Graphics. Center them in the table.
You may want to make the table invisible by setting the border size to "0". To do this, put your cursor in any cell of the table, click Table in the menu bar. Choose Properties. Choose Table. The Table Properties dialog box will appear; make your choices (experiment until you find what you like). Click Apply. Click OK.
Set the Page Properties
Click on Format in the menu bar. Choose Background. A Page Properties dialog box will appear.
General tab
- Location: Shows where on your hard drive the page is stored. Just leave this alone.
- Title: If this is not capitalized, change it now. It should be: Navigation.
- Base Location: We do not need to do anything with this for this site.
- Default Target Frame: This should be main. Leave it as is.
-
Background Sound: If you want your site to play music continuously (as long as this page is open) you can add it now.
- Browse: Browse your hard drive for the file you want your site to play. Many home page owners play seasonal music.
- Loop: For choosing how long, or how many times the selection should play. Continuous loop is the most common choice. This means the song will play as long as the page is open.
Format the Page Background
General Tab
- Formatting: This is where you choose a background image. You can browse your system for the correct one.
- Watermark: The watermark check box will become available when you have chosen your background. Checking this box makes the image you have chosen NOT scroll. It will be "fixed".
- Enable Hyperlink Rollover Effect: This option will become available if your browser compatibility allows it. Choose the effects you want from the options available. (It is self explanatory and experimentation is easy to alter.)
-
Colors: Choose background, text and hyperlink colors.
- Very Important! Choose a complimentary background color even if you have chosen to use a background image. It allows your page to have more continuity while waiting for the background image to load (there is no major change from white to the image). And, there are many browsers still in use that are text only. This may cause reading difficulty for some of your visitors.
- Get background information from another page: This is very useful, when not using a theme, to keep all of your pages consistent.
This is all we are going to do with this dialog box right now. Click OK and the dialog box will close; changes will take effect.
Set the Links
Highlight Home, click the hyperlink shortcut on the tools bar. Scroll to main, select it, and click OK. Do this for each of the pages.
Click the Preview tab at the bottom of the page. Check to make sure everything looks the way you want it to: rollover effects, background coloring, etc. If you are satisfied, close and save the changes.
