Most people say they use a search engine to find the information they are looking for on the internet. There is really no cohesive method for disputing these surveys. Undoubtedly, search engines direct more people every day to the content they are searching for than any other one method available. For this reason, it is mandatory that your strive for a great position in as many search engines as posssible.

  Internet Links  

Unless a website is truly objectionable and a visitor uses the back button to leave, they will probably leave by clicking on a link they find within that web site. Many people do not even realize they have left one web site and gone to another, so it is very difficult to determine the exact usefulness of links on other web sites.

It is assumed, by studying site server statistics, that the most popular method of getting visitors to your site is with links from other web sites. Even though most people claim they use a search engine to find what they are looking for, what is reallly happening is they are using the search engine to get them started on their quest. Linking between similar sites is what really produces visitors.

  Free Links  

There are many ways to gain free links to your site. Here is a short listing of the most useful methods. (If you think of or read about another method, not listed here, that doesn't mean that it is not an excellent method, it may be. We would appreciate you letting us know about it so we can research it and report on that method here.)
  • Visit sites similar to your own, write the owner an email asking him if he/she would like to trade links.
  • Many webstites offer free link placement. It won't do you any good if the site is not similar to your own.
  • FFA Links Pages. Often automated. For the most part, they are a waste of time.

  Paid Links  

Many sites sell advertising space. This is a sure way of getting your link seen. Many very busy sites sell advertising space quite reasonably.
Two words of caution, One: Make sure the site you are buying space from has visitors that will likely also visit your site. Two: Read the small print. Know where on their site your link will be, how big it will be (text, banner, button,) and how long it will be there.
