There are two methods of advertising via email. Direct mailing, advertisement in an email newsletter. Or creating your own mailing list for either of the methods above. Direct mailing offers the advantage of being the only content in the email, placing your ad in a newsletter offers the advantage of knowing a good portion of those receiving it will at least open the email (they want to read the newsletter.) Building your own mailing list offers the largest advantage in knowing where the email addresses came from and knowing, for sure, that your advertisement is where it is supposed to be. If you pay someone else to get your advertisement out via email, make sure the list of addresses was gathered in a reputable way. Ask them. Do not accept any answer that is not to your satisfaction. Also find out how old their list is. People change their email address nearly as often as they change their clothes, an old list will not provide the results you are looking for. The older the list, the cheeper it should be per 100 or 1000 names.
How? Freebies! Everybody loves something free. If you give them something free they will either want to talk about or allow to be seen, you are promoting word-of-mouth advertising. Suggestions?
One small reminder here. Do you ever accept a freebie off of the internet when there are strings attached? Neither do I. Folks might talk about your site, but if you attach strings to your freebie, they won't be saying nice thinkgs.
